Overview
Apple A Day is a mobile app I designed to help insured adults find in-network providers and contact clinics directly. The idea came from my experience as a public health nurse, where I saw patients get penalized by inaccurate insurance directories, often unknowingly going out of network. This project was about creating something that was truly clear, easy to use, and trustworthy.
⸻
Problem
Many healthcare directories are outdated or wrong, creating “ghost networks.” Patients are left to figure things out on their own, often with no support. The challenge was designing an app that reduced that burden by prioritizing accuracy, clarity, and fast access to the right provider.
⸻
Approach
I used the Double Diamond design model to guide my process:
• Research: I interviewed insured adults aged 50–64 and mapped out how they search for doctors. Most were skeptical of digital tools, but wanted something easy to understand.
• Synthesis: I translated insights into personas, task flows, and user stories. One user described feeling like “you’re just guessing every time you make an appointment.” That guided my design direction.
• Prototyping & Testing: After early user testing, I revised UI labels, interaction flows, and content, focusing on reducing ambiguity and helping people trust what they’re seeing.
• Visual System: I created a clean UI with muted tones and clear typography. Accessibility, legibility, and minimal steps were top priorities. I also built the brand, marketing site, and desktop version.
⸻
Outcome
The app guides users through finding a provider, confirming they accept their insurance, and contacting the clinic all in a streamlined interface designed to reduce confusion. The project reflects my ability to listen closely, structure complex information, and turn user research into practical tools.
⸻
Reflection
This case was about more than UI or visual design, it was about building clarity into a system that’s usually anything but. My strength lies in understanding how people think and work, and in designing tools that feel intuitive, grounded, and authentic.
